The property

The tower at Elizabetes iela 55 was built between 1967 and 1979 as Hotel Latvija, the highest category hotel of the Soviet state tourism committee, designed to receive organised groups of foreign visitors. At 95 metres and 27 floors it remains one of the tallest buildings in Latvia, and a KGB listening post occupied its upper floors.

It was renovated in 2001 and again by 2006, and now operates as the Radisson Blu Latvija Conference & Spa Hotel with 571 rooms and suites. The building carries its history openly: the scale, the lobby and the sightlines are unmistakably of their period, while the fittings are contemporary. On the ground floor sits Olympic Voodoo Casino, the largest gaming floor in the Baltic states.

Location

The hotel stands in the centre of Riga, a few minutes from the Esplanade park and directly beside the Art Nouveau district around Alberta iela, which holds one of the densest concentrations of Jugendstil architecture in Europe. The Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a ten-minute walk south, and the Central Market and railway station are a little further.

Rooms and accommodation

There are 571 rooms and suites across 27 floors, including a presidential suite. Higher floors carry the view that is the tower's real asset, over the Old Town spires and the Daugava. Because the building has been renovated in phases, categories differ noticeably; the operator's own booking pages set out which floors and categories carry which fittings.
