The property

Marina Bay Sands opened in 2010 to a design by Moshe Safdie, at a construction cost of around eight billion Singapore dollars, which made it the most expensive standalone casino property in the world at the time. Three towers inspired by a deck of cards carry a 340-metre SkyPark across their roofs, cantilevered 66.5 metres beyond the north tower and holding a 150-metre infinity pool.

The resort holds more than 2,500 rooms and suites, a convention centre of about 120,000 square metres, the ArtScience Museum, the Shoppes retail mall and a casino in the podium beneath the towers. It was conceived as a piece of national tourism infrastructure rather than as a casino with a hotel attached, and the licensing conditions reflect that.

Location

The resort sits at 10 Bayfront Avenue on the Marina Bay waterfront, connected by underground walkways to the financial district and by a bridge to Gardens by the Bay. Merlion Park, the Singapore Flyer and the Civic District are all within a short walk or one stop on the MRT, and Changi Airport is about twenty minutes away by road.

Rooms and accommodation

More than 2,500 rooms and suites are spread across the three towers, with the higher categories facing either the bay and the financial district or the gardens. Pool access on the SkyPark is limited to hotel guests, which is the single most important thing to know when comparing rates.

Amenities and services

The SkyPark observation deck and infinity pool are the signature. Below them sit the Shoppes mall, the ArtScience Museum, a theatre programme, a convention centre and a spa, all inside one property.

Restaurants and bars

The resort holds a large collection of restaurants by international chefs, alongside a food court and cafes in the Shoppes and bars on the SkyPark. Prices span a very wide range, from hawker-style counters to fine dining.

Entertainment

Theatres, the ArtScience Museum, a nightly light and water show on the promenade and the gardens next door make up the programme. The resort is designed so that a guest never has to leave it, which is either the attraction or the drawback depending on the trip.

Nearby

Gardens by the Bay is across the bridge, Merlion Park and the Civic District are along the waterfront, and the Singapore Flyer and Marina Barrage are within a short walk or ride.

Marina Bay Sands Casino

Open 24 hours

Official site

The casino

The casino occupies about 15,000 square metres across four levels in the podium beneath the towers, with roughly 500 gaming tables and around 3,000 electronic gaming machines. It is one of only two licensed casinos in Singapore, alongside Resorts World Sentosa, and it is open 24 hours.

The minimum age is 21 and a passport or national identity document is checked at the entrance. Singapore citizens and permanent residents pay a statutory casino entry levy; foreign visitors enter free on presentation of a passport. Slippers, shorts and sleeveless tops are refused.

Casino history

Singapore prohibited casino gaming for decades and reversed the policy in the mid-2000s under strict conditions: exactly two licences, an entry levy for residents to discourage local play, a minimum age of 21, and an obligation to build convention, museum and public attractions alongside the gaming floor. Marina Bay Sands opened in 2010 as the first of the two. The model has been studied and copied across Asia, and the entry levy remains the clearest expression of its logic.

House rules and entry

A passport or national ID is checked at the entrance and the minimum age is 21. Citizens and permanent residents pay the statutory entry levy. Dress is smart casual, with slippers, shorts and sleeveless tops refused, and the operator publishes full house rules on its site.

Age restrictions

Responsible gambling

Gambling is entertainment with a price, not a way to make money. Set a budget before you enter, keep it separate from the money you need for the trip, and stop when it is gone. Every casino in this list must offer self-exclusion on request.
